Music is important to us at Halton School and each month we choose a different genre of music to listen to. Miss Humphrys teaches us about the history of the genre as well as some interesting facts to remember whilst we are listening.

Music of the month for November: Music from World War 1 and World War 2.

Music during war time was really important for keeping up morale, both at home and away at war. Music is amazing for lifting peoples moods, even in the worst times! It was something that could be shared, and was a link between families and the troops.

World War 1 - only rich people had radios, so music was mainly shared in Music Hall and in Revues away from home.  People sang a lot as families at home too. The songs were often humorous, or were about love or feeling sad because people were missing family and friends, and were worried about them.

By World War 2, almost every household had a radio, so it was much easier to share the music, even in the trenches. Songs and the artists became really well known, and not just for songs about the War.

The musical artists came from all over the world, but particularly UK, USA and Germany. Lots of films about the world wars were also made, using lots of the music of the time. Musicals were very popular after World War 2.

Popular songs from World War 1:-
Its a long way to Tipperary
Keep the home fires burning
Over there
Good Bye - ee
When this lousy war is over....
Boiled Beef and Carrots

Musicians and singers from World War 2:-
Glen Miller
Vera Lynne
Flanagan and Allen
The Andrews Sisters
George Formby
Frank Sinatra
Bing Crosby
Ella Fitzgerald
